Aizawl: The Mizoram government has decided not to collect the biometric data of the Myanmarese seeking refuge in the state.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in April had directed the Mizoram and Manipur governments to collect the biometric data of Myanmar nationals taking refuge in the states.
The MHA had directed both the states to complete the process of collection of biometric data of the Myanmar refugees by the end of September.
While a pilot project for recording biometric data of Myanmar nationals was launched across all 11 districts of Mizoram, primarily in relief camps where the refugees are staying, the state decided not to go ahead with the exercise.
Senior officials told The Northeast Journal that the decision has been taken at the highest level not to go ahead with the exercise citing violation of human rights.
The MHA on Thursday had directed the Manipur government to fasten the process of capturing the biometric details of the refugees from Myanmar.
The Centre also decided to extend the deadline to complete the exercise by March 31, 2024, the sources said.
