Rikman G Momin takes over as new Meghalaya BJP Chief

Shillong: Meghalaya BJP president, Rikman G Momin has termed his job as ‘very challenging’, and his primary task would be to strengthen the saffron party in the state.

Momin said his duty is to strengthen the BJP in Meghalaya is crucial because the saffron party has not been able to progress electorally in the past many years.

“I have taken over as the president of the party, and we are going to work together along with the outgoing president and all party leaders and workers,” Momin said after taking charge as the new BJP president of Meghalaya.

The party will have a team, and as a team, we can work together, Momin said.

Asked about his priorities as the new BJP president, Momin said his duty is to strengthen the party.

On acceptability of the BJP in Meghalaya, Momin said that in people’s mind, there is hope for the BJP and the people have seen how Prime Minister, Narendra Modi works for the country.

Asked how challenging is his job, as the BJP has not been able to grow and increase the number of seats, Momin said, “it is a very challenging job.

“Though we have two MLAs, our vote shares have gone up significantly. Next time we will be able to win more than 2 seats,” he said.

The BJP which is ruling the NDA government at Centre, and is a coalition partner in Meghalaya, has not been able to increase its tally from two seats in both 2018 and 2023 Assembly elections.

BJP leader in-charge Meghalaya, Chuba Ao said that the criterion for appointment of Momin as the party president in Meghalaya has been because of his loyalty to the party.

Momin was not that a popular leader till his appointment as the president of the BJP Meghalaya unit. He had associated with the BJP since 2014.
