Arunachal Pradesh: Sela Tunnel Likely To Be Opened in December 2023

Tawang: The strategically crucial Sela Tunnel, which will make movement of armed forces ‘easier’ to reach the China border, is all set to be inaugurated in December this year.

Sources in the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) told The NE Journal that more than 95percent of the work is complete, and now the engineers are ensuring the various aspects of the safety measures for the launch.

The tunnel will ensure all-weather connectivity to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, the headquarters of the Indian Army’s major installations in the easern Himalayan theatre.

The Sela Tunnel has been excavated below the 13,800 ft Sela Pass, which remains closed often due to snowfall and landslides.

The tunnel will provide access to Tawang and other forward areas bordering China throughout the year.

The access will enhance the strategic and operational capabilities of the Indian Army in the eastern Himalayas, where China is often caught engaged in unwarranted adventurism.

One of the engineers engaged in the Sela Tunnel project said that some works in the escape tunnel and pavement are pending, and it will take about 45 days for completion.

The official also said that safety measures are being installed inside the tunnel in the final phase.
