Guwahati : Assam Congress MLA Aftabuddin Mollah was on Wednesday arrested for his alleged ‘hate speech’ against the Hindu community and priests.
Mollah representing Jaleswar Assembly constituency was picked up on Tuesday night from the residence of Congress’ legislature party’s chief whip, Wazed Ali Choudhury at the MLA Quarters in Guwahati.
Mollah had reportedly made derogatory remarks targeting priests, Namgharias, and seers during a public meeting at Goalara on November 4.
“Wherever there is any rape, the temples priests and namgharias are involved,” Mollah reportedly said at a public meeting.
In fact, the Assam Congress issued a show cause notice against Mollah for his inflammatory speech.
Mollah apologised for his remarks on November 5.
Police have booked the Congress MLA under various sections of the IPC for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.
