Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that the crime rate in the state has dropped in the last five years due to pro-active measures of the government.
“Our commitment to make Assam a crime-free state is moving positively in the right direction,” Sarma wrote on his micro-blogging site X accompanied by crime statistics from 2019 up to August 2023.
Murder cases dropped to 686 as in August 31, 2023 compared to 1235 cases in 2019. The incidents of rape cases, which stood at 1952 in 2019, witnessed a threefold decrease, with only 656 reported cases in 2023. Dacoity cases also showed a significant decline, dropping from 198 in 2019 to a mere 55 in 2023.
Chief Minister Sarma attributed the decline of crime in Assam due to active police patrolling, increased efficiency in crime management, use of forensic tools, greater people-police coordination, and firm support from the Assam government.
Meanwhile, Assam police chief, GP Singh has reaffirmed the force’s commitment to the state’s security.
Responding to Chief Minister Sarma’s post, Singh assured, “Sir, @assampolice shall make all efforts to fulfil your commitment to the people of Assam.”
