Imphal : In a daring heist, unidentified armed men looted Rs. 18.85 crore from a Punjab National Bank (PNB) at Viewland in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Thursday evening.
The incident took place at around 5:30 pm when around 10 armed masked men entered the bank from the back door.
Police officials are yet to confirm about the exact amount looted.
“The robbers overpowered the security guards and the bank officials. They were handcuffed at gunpoint and took away money from currency chest vault,” sources said, adding that the security guards and bank officials were all locked up inside the store room before fleeing away with the cash.
After the incident,a police team had rushed to the bank to take stock of the situation, even as the Punjab National Bank authority has formally lodged a complaint.
Meanwhile, Manipur police and Assam Rifles had launched a manhunt to nab the robbers.
No arrest has been made so far by the local authority. This is the first time such incident that has happened in Ukhrul town.
