Fresh tension in Manipur: two teenagers went missing, students hit the streets

Missing youths' families hands over memorandum to Governor Anusuiya Uikey.

Imphal: Fresh tension gripped Manipur’s capital and its adjoining areas on Monday after two boys went missing since Sunday.

The two identified as Maibam Avinash (16) and Ningthoujam Anthony (19) are from Akham Awang Leikai under Lamshang police station in Imphal West district. Both the boys are from the Meitei community.

According to their families, the two boys had gone towards Sekmai area on a two-wheeler bearing registration Number MN01-AN-3387 on Sunday morning to attend a function before they went missing.

When they failed to turn up till late afternoon, the family members called their mobile phones, but there was no response.

Police has registered a missing case and started an investigation to trace the missing boys.

Meanwhile, police have recovered the phones of the two boys wrapped in a black polythene packet near an oil pump in Senapati district.

Hundreds of students staged a protest in Imphal demanding the safe release of the two boys.

Earlier, the parents and family members of the missing teenagers, accompanied by Lamsang MLA Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh, met Governor  Anusuiya Uikey and Chief Minister N Biren Singh seeking their assistance for the safe return of the two boys.

Uikey also spoke with Manipur DGP Rajiv Singh over the phone and was informed that combined search operation by security forces are going on in the suspected locations.

It may be recalled that two students Phijam Hemanjit (20) and a 17-year-old girl Hijam Linthoingambi had gone missing on July 6.  Disturbing pictures of the two missing students showing their dead bodies in gory detail and the other shows them sitting in fear, and in the background are armed men with their guns clearly visible went viral on social media in September 23, soon after the Internet services were restored in the trouble-torn state.

The Manipur government has handed over the case to CBI for investigation. So far as many as five people have been arrested by the CBI in connection with the brutal murder of these two students.
