Imphal: The Manipur government has prohibited the circulation of photos and videos “depicting violent activities which aggravate the law and order situation further, officials said on Thursday.
“Nobody shall be allowed to circulate/spread such videos/images/pictures through various social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, X etc. on electronic equipment like tablet, computer, mobile phone etc. and sending bulk SMS,” Home Commissioner, T. Ranjit Singh said in his order.
The order directed people in possession of videos/images that depict causing/inflicting harm/injury to body and/or damage, to public/private property etc to approach the nearest superintendent of police and submit the same for taking appropriate legal action.
“Anyone found violating the government’s orders shall be booked and prosecuted under relevant provisions of the law, without any exception,” Singh warned.
The Manipur government on Wednesday extended the suspension of mobile data internet services for five days till October 16 evening after the state police had informed the government that there are reports of incidents of violence like confrontation of the public with security forces, trying to mob elected member’s residences, civil protests in front of police stations etc.
Internet services were restored in Manipur on September 23, almost five months since its shutdown after the ethnic violence broke out on May 4.
However, the government re-imposed banned internet services on September 26 after student groups took to the streets protesting the killing of two students Luwangbi Linthoingambi Hijam (17) Phijam Hemanjit Singh (20).
The photographs of bodies of two missing students went viral after the internet was restored in Manipur on September 23.
