Manipur: Radical Meitei Leepun chief escapes ambush

Imphal : Unidentified assailants fired on a vehicle carrying Mayengbam Pramod Singh, the chief of Manipur’s radical group Meitei Leepun at Langol in Imphal West district on Friday morning.

However, Pramot and his driver Johny Loukrakpam were not injured in the attack.

Six bullets hit the vehicle of Pramod while it  was being parked at Langol Lamkhai, near Shija Hospital and Research Institute, police said.

“Some unidentified people about two people who came in a blue colour car from Shija hospital side fired 6 rounds of bullets while Pramod’s driver was parking at the road side in between Northern Gate of NIT and Shija hospital,” a police official said.

A police team  from Lamphel Police Station along with Manipur Forensic Science arrived at the scene and took stock of the situation.

Police have registered a case into the incident.

Pramod was booked in July for allegedly promoting enmity between groups and criminal conspiracy on a complaint from a Kuki group amid ethnic violence in the state.

The violence between the dominant Meitei and tribal Kuki communities has since May 3 left at least 175 people dead and over 50,000 displaced.

Kuki groups have blamed radical organisations Meitei Leepun and Arambai Tenggol for instigating and perpetuating the violence in Manipur.
