Imphal : The United Nations Human Rights has expressed concern over the vandalisation of renowned human rights defender Babloo Loitongbam’s house in Manipur.
This distressing incident occurred on the same day when Meitei Leepun, a radical Meitei organisation, declared a ‘boycott’ against the rights activist, prohibiting him from making public statements.
The international rights panel has held Meitei Leepun and Arambai Tengol responsible for the attacked.
“We are alarmed by threats to human rights defender Babloo Loitongbam by Meitei Leepun & Arambai Tengol groups in Manipur for speaking out on inter-communal violence since May. We urge authorities to protect him, his family & home, & hold perpetrators accountable,” the UNHR wrote on ‘X’ on Friday.
The mob stormed Loitongbam’s house at Kwakeithel Thiyam Leikai in Imphal West at around 6 pm and vandalised the properties. The mob also took CCTV cameras and the footage before fleeing from the rights activists’ residence.
On seeing the mob, the local people tried to stop the mob but they overpowered them and locked the main gate from inside and started vandalising Loitongbam’s properties.
After the incident, a team of Lamphel Police station rushed to the spot for spot enquiry.
“Around 30 people came and enquired about Loitongbam and demanded that he should make a public clarification on the false statements given to the media on the Manipur crisis earlier,” police said.
Loitongbam could not be reached for his comments.
