Shillong : Meghalaya government has evacuated 26 students, who were stranded in flash flood triggered by a glacial lake outburst in Sikkim, and they are on their way to Shillong, an official said on Saturday.
“A bus with 26 students from Meghalaya left Majitar in Sikkim via Siliguri last (Friday) evening, has crossed Kokrajhar and is on its way to Shillong. Glad to see our students safe,” Chief Minister Conrad Sangma wrote on X.
Sangma said that student’s from Meghalaya studying in Sikkim had contacted him for support to return back home due to the current situation there.
A official who is coordinating the evacuation process said the students are expected to reach Shillong by this evening.
On Friday, the Meghalaya government activated a helpline: 1800 345 3644 to help students and citizens stranded in Sikkim.
At least 26 people, including seven soldiers of the Indian Army have died and 143 remained missing, even as Sikkim authorities have started evacuating residents from the banks of Shako Cho lake, as the lake is one the verge of bursting n the northern part of Sikkim.
