Illegal cough syrup factory busted at Ummulong in Meghalaya, 3 arrested

Ummulong: Meghalaya Police on Sunday busted a spurious cough syrup factory and arrested three people.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided a godown at Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills district, and seized 9,889 bottles of cough syrups. One person, who was trying to smuggle the consignment to Bangladesh, was arrested.

Based on the confession of the arrested smuggler, police raided the illegal cough syrup factory at Ummulong in West Jaintia Hills district.

From the illegal factory, 600 bottles of Elcodyl cough syrup, 10 bottles of flavouring agent, 11 bottles of food colour, huge quantity of phensedyl, and books on Pharmacology were seized.

Cartons and phensedyl labels, bottles, caps, a bottling machine and around ₹11,000 in cash were seized.

The illegal cough syrup factory used to run from the basement of the house, the owner told the police that the spurious cough syrups, which were blended with Phensedyl, were mostly sent across the border to Bangladesh.

Following the interrogation of the two accused, the police arrested another person involved in allegedly transporting the spurious syrups toward Assam.
