Shillong: The Meghalaya government and the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) have mutually agreed to shift the settlers from Them Mulong (Sweepers’ Lane to another place where an additional land measuring 1.4 areas would be allotted apart from an existing plot of 2.14 areas currently being occupied by the Shillong Municipal Board as it’s temporary office.
The two plots would be utilised for the construction of houses to accommodate the residents who are presently residing at Them Mulong (Sweepers’ Lane) numbering around 342 families.
This understanding to relocate the settlers from Them Mulong has been reached during a meeting of the state government’s high level committee (HLC) on Thursday which was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong in the presence of another Deputy Chief Minister (incharge urban affairs), Sniawbhalang Dhar and representatives of the HPC as well as representatives in-charge of Gurudwara from Delhi.
Tynsong told reporters that the meeting was positive and fruitful where various points related to the relocation issue were discussed.
He informed that the HPC has also requested the state government to give them a few more weeks to discuss the issue with the people residing at Them Mulong after which, another meeting mostly the final meeting to resolve the issue would be held in the new year, that is, in January 2024.
Tynsong said that right from day one, the discussion has been on the issue related to the relocation of the settlers from Them Mulong and the state government is sticking by that.
The issue related to relocating settlers from Them Mulong to another place has been pending for many decades due to various complicated issues including litigations in courts.
