Meghalaya to spend Rs 1000 crore in sports infrastructure

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday said that in the next five years, the government will spent close to Rs 1000 crore to create sports infrastructure across the state.

“Since the inception of the State till 2018, not much was spent to develop and promote sports, but Meghalaya Democratic Alliance Government has realized the potential of sports and we have come up with programmes to promote sports in the State,” he said after laying the foundation for Rongjeng Stadium in East Garo Hills district, which is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 9.25 crore.

In the last five years from 2018, the Chief Minister said that the government had spent over Rs 400 crore, compared to the past 45 years.

Announcing that the government will upgrade 25 football playgrounds in the State with artificial turfs, he also said that different sporting activities are being given thrust to further develop, so that the youth can take maximum advantage of the ongoing sports programmes.

“Our sole focus is to create better infrastructure and ensure that our youth are given the platform to unleash their talent,” he stressed and also took the opportunity to enlighten the people about CM Elevate programme that aims to support entrepreneurs to setup different business ventures.

“Our plan is not only to build sports infrastructure but to build the morale and aptitude of many talented youth and gifted sportsmen and women in the State. This is part of our big dream to see Meghalaya bring medals and laurels to the country in national and international platforms,” the Chief Minister said

He also informed that Meghalaya Games 2023 will be hosted in Tura this year, which will be attended by over 3000 athletes from across the State.

Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri said that the Government was committed to promote sports in the state and wants to make Meghalaya as a “sports capital”.
