Two rapists sentenced to 14 years rigorous imprisonment in Meghalaya

Shillong: Two men who were convicted for raping a 12 year old student in 2017 have been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 14 years and fine of Rs 50,000.

A press release issued on Wednesday by Sylvester Nongtnger, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills district said that on 03/12/2018, an FIR was received at Mawngap Police Station that a girl of 12 years, student of class VII had been raped by Mortonjune Kharbani (45-50 yrs). The victim was raped multiple times in the year 2017 in her house while she was alone at home.

Accordingly, a case was registered at Mawngap Police Station under various sections including POCSO Act and the case was investigated by SI, Larisha Kharjana.

“During the course of investigation, it was revealed that the survivor victim had also been sexually assaulted by another co-accused identified as Lumding Syiemlieh. On completion of the investigation the case was charge sheeted against both the above mentioned accused on 28/01/2019,” the statement said.

On completion of the trial in the Court of Special Judge (POCSO), East Khasi Hills, Shillong, Swapna G. Momin, the court passed the judgment on October 27, 2023 sentencing both the accused to undergo a rigorous imprisonment for a period of 14 years and a fine of Rs. 50,000 each after they were found guilty for the offences.
