BJP releases list of 21 candidates for upcoming Mizoram polls

Aizawl: The BJP will release its election manifesto for the upcoming Mizoram assembly elections ahead of the visit of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi who is expected to campaign for party candidates in the poll-bound state on October 30.

BJP national president, J. P. Nadda will release the party manifesto in Aizawl on October 25.
“Prime Minister Modi is expected to launch his election campaign from Mamit town on October 30,” BJP Mizoram unit president, Vanlalhmuaka told The Northeast Journal over the phone.

Vanlalhmuaka will contest from Dampa assembly constituency, and the saffron party is fielding former Mizoram speaker, Lalrinliana Sailo from Mamit assembly constituency, after he joined the party from the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) recently.

Former minister and former MNF MLA, Dr. K Beichhua will fight to retain his Saiha assembly seat.

Apart from Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari will be campaigning in Saiha and Dampa assembly constituencies respectively.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is the convenor of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), will also campaign for BJP candidates in Hachhek assembly constituency.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home, Yanthungo Patton and BJP National Spokesperson and in-charge Mizoram, Mmhonlumo Kikon are campaigning for the party’s candidates in the state.

The BJP put up candidates in 23 assembly seats and are optimistic to win in areas where ethnic minorities such as Brus and Chakmas inhabited.

Christians constitute 87.16 per cent of Mizoram population, followed by 2.75 per cent Hindus and 1.35 per cent Muslims.

In the 2018 Mizoram assembly polls, the BJP won one of the 39 assembly seats it had contested, with a vote share of 8.09 per cent.
