Mizoram Assembly polls : Election Commission defers vote counting to December 4

Aizawl : The Election Commission on Friday revised the counting of votes for Mizoram Assembly polls will now take place on December 4, instead of December 3, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced Friday

Earlier, counting of votes were to be held along with that of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana on December 3.

The poll panel said the date has been revised as several representations were received from various quarters of the state to change the vote counting day.

“The Commission has received several representations from various quarters requesting for change in date of counting from December 3, 2023 to some other week day, on the ground that December 3, 2023 being Sunday a special significance for the people of Mizoram,” the Election Commission said in an official statement.

Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a conglomerate of 15 major churches, had urged churches to organise prayers during church service so that counting is not held on Sunday, which is a sacred day for the majority of Christians in the State.

“The Commission, having considered these representations, has decided to revise the date of counting for the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to 4th December, 2023 (Monday),” the statement said.

Polling for the 40-member Mizoram assembly was held on November 7. More than 80 per cent of over 8.57 lakh voters cast their votes to decide the fate of 174 candidates.

The India Today-Axis My India in its exit poll has predicted that the  Zoram People’s Movement is likely to win 28-35 of the seats in a 40-member Mizoram Assembly.
