Aizawl : The Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a conglomerate of major churches in the state has shot a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI) seeking to change the counting of votes not to fall on Saturday and Sunday
Elections to the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly will be held on November 7, and the counting of votes will be held on December 3..
In their petition letter to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, the MKHC said, “Sunday is a sacred day for Christians and the Church worship services are held in all towns and villages, refraining from secular and other business activities.”
“Therefore, we request you to change the date for counting of votes not to fall on Saturday and Sunday,” the powerful church committee said.
Meanwhile, MKHC Vice President Rev. R. Lalrintluanga said that the committee would meet to decide on its next course of action.
“In case, if there is no positive response to our request to change the counting of votes the MKHC will meet again and decide accordingly,” Rev. Lalrintluanga told The Northeast Journal over the phone.
The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and opposition Congress in poll-bound Mizoram have written to the Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar urging him to reschedule the date for counting of votes for the Mizoram elections on December 3, which falls on Sunday.
Christians constitute 87.16 per cent of Mizoram population, followed by 2.75 per cent Hindus and 1.35 per cent Muslims.
